Centretown Ottawa Toastmasters is one of the city’s best clubs. The atmosphere is friendly, fun and supportive. Everyone at our meetings is made to feel welcome and appreciated, from complete novices to experienced speakers. Best of all, Centretown is a safe place to try new things and then get feedback on how to improve on them.
Each meeting includes prepared speeches, impromptu ones, known as Table Topics, and then an evaluation portion. When new members join, they are encouraged to participate; however, there is no rush and no pressure. The Toastmasters program allows you to progress at your own pace.
Constructive evaluation is essential to the Toastmasters philosophy. Every time you give a prepared speech, an evaluator will point out strengths as well as suggest improvements. In addition, everyone in the club will write up brief comments you can take home and study. Receiving and learning how to give such feedback is a great learning experience. In Toastmasters, encouragement and improvement go hand-in-hand.
Centretown Ottawa Toastmasters also offers a mentorship program for new members, where interested mentees are paired with experienced members for light guidance and support.
So why choose us over other clubs? Location, timing and atmosphere: Meetings take place on Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. at the Jack Purcell Community Centre (Elgin and Gilmour). The community centre is within walking distance from Parliament Hill, the ByWard Market, the Glebe and Centretown and the 6:30 p.m. start gives you enough time to get to the meeting relaxed and refreshed. Come and try it out. We welcome guests and, if you’re like most of those who come as guests once or twice, you’ll be a member in no time. It might be the entertaining speeches that bring you back, it may be the chocolates occasionally given out for a job well done, or maybe it’ll be the post-Toasties gatherings we orchestrate about once a month. Whatever it is, you’re sure to learn a lot and accomplish your public speaking goals at the same time.
At Centretown, we pride ourselves on our friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Meetings are fun and informal! Come and see for yourself.
